Moisson Montréal is the first large food bank in Quebec to obtain a second level Ecocert certification in sustainable development.
The certification obtained is a guarantee of transparency, respect for resources, and environmentally responsible practices. To obtain this certification, a certain number of criteria must be met (transparency of activities, efficiency, and reliability of the organization).
For more than 25 years, Ecocert has been the reference for organic certification in Canada. Throughout the world, Ecocert guarantees companies a preeminent status for environmental responsibility.
Our committee of employees, regular volunteers, and food suppliers continues to work hard to be environmentally responsible and to reach even higher levels.

Food recovery and reclamation
In 2021-22, Moisson Montréal received the equivalent of $100 million in food and 99.8% of this amount came from donations, food recovery, and food reclamation. We reduce food waste by purchasing as little as possible of the food that we redistribute, and by using our bio-food sanitation line, our bagging line, and our crusher. We also composted and recycled 461,419 kg of food.

An energy-efficient building
From 2006 to 2011, a volunteer-driven energy upgrade project involving more than 270 companies was initiated. Under the umbrella of the Coalition énergie et construction durable (CECD), the project’s objective was to make the building that houses Moisson Montréal more environmentally responsible and to meet sustainable development standards.
The project was a great success culminating in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, fuel costs, and 70% of refrigerant. In addition, it increased the reliability of the systems and the durability of the building equipment.
